31/366
Long, late day at work today. But still time to finish off the first month of my 366 project - only 11 more to go!

Still Life With Menu
30/366
Doing some advance prep work tonight for tomorrow's dinner: for golden pear soup from Mollie Katzen's "Still Life With Menu." As I did not yet have a photo I liked for today, I thought I'd photograph the ingredients instead of the finished dish (following the "Still Life" from the title of the cookbook).

Engrossed
28/366
We went to the Somerville Winter Farmer's Market this morning, and Isaac was completely captivated by the musicians playing upstairs.

Memorial Hall, Gray Day
27/366
A gray, rainy day today; a good day for black and white photography. Memorial Hall at Harvard University is one of my favorite photography subjects, seeing as I work only a few blocks away. Trying to find new ways to photograph it so as not to be repetitive and boring.

Lattice Lines
26/366
My wife made cranberry-pear pie for dessert tonight. Lucky me! I tried to do something a little different with the photo, emphasizing the lattice pattern. This is the one I was most happy with, although I'm not sure I quite managed to capture the vision I had in my head. Something to work on.

Another in the Isaac doing things in boxes series: this time, reading, in canvas.

Just Sitting Here Singing in My Box
22/366
A current favorite activity of Isaac's: playing guitar while sitting in a big cardboard box.
Snowy Saturday
21/366
On a snowy Saturday morning Davis Square is relatively deserted. Trying to capture the grayness of a snowfall on a cloudy winter day.
Snow Capped Fence
20/366
The fence around Harvard Yard looked really pretty in the snow, although this was kind of hard to capture since I had to hold the camera up over my head to get the composition I wanted.

Self Portrait #1
19/366
My first attempt at a self-portrait. Maybe a bit cliched, but part of the point of this project is to challenge myself to branch out in my photography.

Simple Pleasures
18/366
Basil pesto, frozen over the summer. Fresh pasta from the local shop. The pleasant echoes of summer in the dark midwinter.

Rosebud Diner
17/366
On a wet winter night the neon lights of a classic American diner are a welcoming sight. The Rosebud is a classic example of the genre.

Too Cold To Play
16/366
Another very cold day today. Walking past a playground was struck with how desolate an empty playground seems in the winter.

Colorful Jellies
15/366
Went to the aquarium this morning with Isaac. We spent some time at the jellyfish exhibit, where this specimen caught my eye. Unfortunately I cannot recall the species. I had a lot of fun photographing the jellyfish, though: good lighting and a constantly changing subject.

Movie Night
14/366
Took a lot of pictures today but wasn't happy with anything. Made some popcorn before a (rare) movie night tonight, and it turned out to be, while not spectacular, the best photograph of the lot.

Springerle
12/366
My wife's family makes a variety of Christmas cookies every year, including Springerle (German anise-flavored biscuit-like cookies). They are great with tea for dessert.

Afternoon Coffee
11/366
Espresso at Hi-Rise Cafe on Mass Ave in Cambridge. I stop here occasionally for an afternoon espresso and have been thinking about this shot for a few days. It didn't come out exactly as I imagined, but I'm reasonably happy with it anyway.

Jamming
10/366
Isaac turns everything into a musical instrument, and his LEGO Duplo Zoo set is no exception. Here he is playing his 'Elephant Saxophone'.

Drink
9/366
Celebrating my sister's birthday for the second night with a trip to Drink, Barbara Lynch's cocktail bar in Fort Point.
Apple Brandy Old-Fashioned
8/366
Laird's Apple Brandy. Rittenhouse Rye. Orange bitters. Sugar. Celebrating my sister's birthday with cocktails, cheese, and a roast duck.

Isaac the Reindeer
7/366
Isaac got a kick out of trying on Great Aunt Sue's reindeer antlers while down in Connecticut today celebrating a belated Christmas with family.

Trying to expand my photographic range and find something interesting in the mundane objects of everyday life.

Memorial Hall, Winter Night
5/366
Memorial Hall looks particularly striking with the tower lit on a cold winter's night.

TAGS
4/366
Our local hardware store, Tags. I wanted to play around with "artistic" effects in Lightroom after reading this post, and this picture provided a good opportunity. I think it came out okay, although I have a lot to learn still about post-processing.

Dinner with Daddy
3/366
Isaac and I had dumplings from Qingdao Garden for dinner tonight. As you can tell, they are one of his favorite foods, especially when eaten off of daddy's chopsticks.

The End of the Holiday
2/366
After two Hanukkah parties, three Christmas celebrations, a bris, and a last-minute New Year's Eve party with my siblings, it is back to work tomorrow.

Good Morning, 2012
Every morning
the world
is created.
Under the orange
sticks of the sun
the heaped
ashes of the night
turn into leaves again
and fasten themselves to the high branches —
and the ponds appear
like black cloth
on which are painted islands
of summer lilies.
If it is your nature
to be happy
you will swim away along the soft trails
for hours, your imagination
alighting everywhere.
And if your spirit
carries within it
the thorn
that is heavier than lead —
if it’s all you can do
to keep on trudging —
there is still
somewhere deep within you
a beast shouting that the earth
is exactly what it wanted —
each pond with its blazing lilies
is a prayer heard and answered
lavishly,
every morning,
whether or not
you have ever dared to be happy,
whether or not
you have ever dared to pray.
